Portal 2 came out ten days ago. It debuted at an MSRP of $59.99.
Now, either as a "thank you" to Valve's fans, or a "screw you" to the hundreds of thousands of people that bought it during the first ten days on shelves, GameStop has put all three versions of the game on sale for $20 off. This makes the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions $39.99, while the PC version runs a mere $29.99 (note that if you buy the PS3 version, you get a PC copy for free... that is, when the PSN comes back online). Used copies of the console versions are another $5 cheaper (online only) if you really don't want to support Valve and only help GameStop's bottom line.
Regardless of the reason for the price drop (was it not selling enough?), there really isn't a reason to pick up Valve's latest masterpiece now. The price cut is in effect until May 5 (online or in-store), and you probably won't see it at this price point again for months. Do yourself a favor and go buy this now. You deserve it.
If you don't believe me, I will leave you with this concise and persuasive user review from GameStop.com to assuage any insecurities you might have:
AWESOME GAME if you are unsure whether you should buy don't be just buy it 10/10
You don't have to trust me. Trust him. He grammars well and knows what's up.
UPDATE: Just picked up my copy, and the shelf price was still $59.99. However, ask the salesperson at the counter and it'll still ring up as $20 off. Don't be fooled by stickers!
