As many of you PSN players may have seen, that you were not able to log on to your PSN account and getting the A06 error. That is because Sony has been doing maintenance on it. And here is what I got out it so far in the PSN forums:
The PSN is undergoing an outage and currently these services have been affected:
We will update this thread with more information and when the PSN resumes normal operation.
We sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.
We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available.
Why is Sony doing Maintenance?
From what I can tell from looking on the forums, Sony has had a bunch of viral attacks from various sources, and they have taken this time to improve their security and protection. And since this was kind of a 'we should do this now before it actually does any damage' thing, they didn't send any messages out or alerts saying that they were working on it.
One rumor going around is that the reason for the shut down and rebuild of PSN was due to a certain custom firmware going around. Apparently with a few tweaks with this firmware modified consoles could access PSN and its content for free. Once Sony realized this, they shut the network down.
So as you can see, the PSN may be down for awhile longer yet. I'll update this when I can.
